196 Students Awarded Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS)

Last Updated: 29 Jul 2025

News Press Releases

1 196 students received the Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS)1 at the 2025 SgIS Award Ceremony. Minister for Education, Mr Desmond Lee, gave out the scholarships at the ceremony.

2 The SgIS aims to nurture a core of Singaporean industry leaders to steer the development of the country's key strategic industries. To date, it is the only scholarship offered in partnership between the Government and local industries. Into its 14th year, SgIS has established itself as one of the choice scholarships in Singapore. Since its inception in 2012, the SgIS has awarded more than 1800 scholarships to Singaporean students.

3 The SgIS highlights the importance the Government and local industries place on developing a pipeline of local talent that are essential for Singapore's economy and businesses in the long run.

4 From 28 Sponsoring Organisations (SOs) in 2012, the number of SOs for SgIS has increased steadily over the years to a total of 153 in 2025. The 153 SOs come from 16 key sectors, including biomedical and pharmaceuticals, electronics, engineering, lifestyle and food, and social services. Their strong support for SgIS provides good career opportunities that will develop a strong Singaporean talent pipeline to support strategic sectors.

5 Mr Chai Chong Meng, Vice President, Site Head Singapore of Lonza Biologics said: "SgIS offers a unique value proposition by fostering early and meaningful engagements between scholars and their Sponsoring Organisations. Unlike traditional scholarships that often support students only during their studies, SgIS creates a long-term developmental pathway that begins even before graduation. What sets SgIS apart is this strong alignment between academic development and industry relevance as it ensures that by the time scholars join us full-time, they are already familiar with our operations, aligned with our mission and ready to contribute meaningfully. From an industry perspective, SgIS strengthens our talent pipeline in a strategic and sustainable way, which is critical for long-term competitiveness and growth."

6 Ms Emily Tan, CEO and Country Director of Thales Solutions Asia Pte Ltd, one of the new SOs this year, said: "In early 2025, the Thales Group launched our 'STEM for ALL' programme in France and Belgium, to nurture young students with funding and mentorship. Partnering with SgIS in Singapore to extend this programme to Asia was a natural fit, with Singapore becoming the first country outside of Europe to be part of this programme. Thales is in multiple industry sectors, including Aerospace, Defence and Security, and Cybersecurity and Digital Identity. The SgIS links us with a large pool of candidates with diverse interests to match these multiple sectors. In our inaugural cohort, we are awarding scholarships to candidates who will later work in cybersecurity and digital identity, public security, air traffic management, as well as at our Digital Factory. As SgIS is awarded to scholars at different stages of their university education, it allows us to accelerate our scholarship programme with scholars joining Thales in the next one to two years. We are curating a programme to support them in developing their core skills and competencies through professional development."

7 All SgIS scholars will also have opportunities to be exposed to industry-relevant experiences and hone their leadership skills, as part of the SgIS Scholars' Development and Engagement Programme. The programme includes:

  • Internships and mentorships conducted by SOs to give undergraduate scholars a head start in acquiring industry knowledge;
  • Forums with thought leaders from the public and private sectors to expose scholars to broader issues concerning Singapore and its key industries; and
  • Social activities organised by the SgIS Scholars' Network Executive Committee (EXCO)2 to develop the scholars' leadership and soft skills, as well as contribute back to the SgIS community and the wider society.

8 By end-2025, more than 1200 SgIS scholars would have graduated from university. They will be part of a sustainable pipeline of industry leaders who can drive Singapore's economic growth.
