News Press Releases

1. A total of 2,541 students from 239 primary and secondary schools participated in the inaugural National Chinese Reading Competition. Among them, 135 students across the primary and secondary school categories advanced to the competition finals today. Guest-of-Honour Ms Jasmin Lau, Minister of State for Education and Chairperson of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), delivered a speech and presented awards to 50 student winners at the award ceremony.

2. Jointly organised by the CPCLL and the Association for Research on AI-assisted Language Learning, with support from local publishers and companies, this new competition aims to foster a love for reading, promote a vibrant Chinese reading culture and cultivate good reading habits among students.

3. In the lead-up to the competition, students were given access to a wide selection of curated Chinese books aligned to their language proficiency levels, allowing them to read extensively over two-and-a-half months. The books ranged from picture books for young readers, to adapted Chinese classics such as "Journey to the West" 《西游记》 for Primary 3 to Primary 6 students and "Water Margin" 《水浒传》for Upper Secondary students. The reading period was followed by an online preliminary round, where students answered questions based on the book contents, with the top performers advancing to the finals. See Annex for the list of schools participating in the finals.
