Singapore Students Win 18 Gold Medals, 17 Silver Medals, 3 Bronze Medals and 1 Team Championship in this Year's International Olympiads and International Young Physicists' Tournament
Last Updated: 27 Aug 2025
The Ministry of Education (MOE) congratulates all students for their outstanding performance in the International Olympiads for Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Nuclear Science, Physics, Artificial Intelligence, Informatics, and the International Young Physicists' Tournament1 , which were held overseas from June to August 2025. Outside of the competitions, our students gained valuable experience through interactions with like-minded peers from all around the world.
36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO)2
2. The Singapore team won four Gold medals at the 36th IBO held in Quezon City, Philippines, from 20 to 27 July 2025, where they emerged joint 1st out of a total of 78 countries/territories and 298 participants. The IBO tests students' Biology skills and knowledge by pitting them against their peers in both practical and theory components. In the practical component, students had to complete four tasks on the topics of biomedical sciences, cell and molecular biology, ecology and systematics, and microbiology. In the theory component, students were challenged with questions across a myriad of topics, including biosystematics, cell and molecular biology, ecology, ethology, genetics and evolution, plant anatomy and physiology, and animal anatomy and physiology.

57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)3
3. The Singapore team won one Gold medal and three Silver medals at the 57th IChO held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 5 to 14 July 2025. The team emerged joint 11th out of a total of 92 countries/territories and 354 participants. Students underwent a diverse range of Chemistry tasks comprising experimental and theoretical components. In the experimental component, students had to synthesise compounds, perform quantitative analysis, and determine the identity of unknown species. In the theoretical component, students were required to solve problems related to biochemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry.

21st International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) 2025 4
4. The Singapore team won one Gold medal, one Silver medal and two Bronze medals at the 21st iGeo held in Bangkok, Thailand from 26 July to 1 August 2025. The team emerged 5th out of 47 teams and 187 participants. The competition covered a wide range of geographical knowledge and skills comprising a written response test, a fieldwork test and a multi-media test. In the written response test, students were assessed on their knowledge about geographically and socially relevant issues. The fieldwork test required students to keenly observe their surroundings, apply geographical skills like mapping, and think inventively to complete assigned tasks. The multi-media test challenged students to think critically and apply their geographical thinking skills in their analysis.
