Junior colleges and Millennia Institute
1. Admission matters
From 2028, there will be changes to the JC and MI admission criteria. Learn more.
- Junior college (JC)
- Millennia Institute (MI)
- Junior college (JC)
- Millennia Institute (MI)
To be eligible for admission to a junior college (JC) course via JAE or DSA-JC in 2026 or 2027, you must meet these 2 criteria:
- Your L1R5 gross aggregate score must not exceed 20.
- Meet the grade requirements for specific subjects.
Aggregate score computation for JC courses
= First Language (L1) + Relevant Subject 1 (R1) + R2 + R3 + R4 + R5
L1R5 | Subjects |
L1 | English or Higher Mother Tongue Language |
R1 | Any 1 best-scoring subject from Humanities |
R2 | Any 1 best-scoring subject from Mathematics or Science |
R3 | Any 1 best-scoring subject from Humanities, Mathematics or Science |
R4, R5 | Any 2 best-scoring subjects |
Note: Religious Knowledge cannot be used as one of the best-scoring subjects for aggregate score computation.
What cannot be used for aggregate computation
You cannot use:
- The grades of both Higher Mother Tongue and Mother Tongue in the same aggregate score computation. For example, if Higher Chinese is used as the first language (L1), Chinese cannot be used as a relevant subject (R4 or R5).
- “Merit” and “Pass” grades for the Mother Tongue ‘B’ Syllabus for aggregate computation.
- Mother Tongue Language (MTL): Chinese, Malay, Tamil and MTL approved by MOE in lieu of an official MTL (Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Thai, Urdu).
- Higher MTL: Higher Chinese, Higher Malay, and Higher Tamil. There is no Higher level MTL-in-lieu.
- Mother Tongue 'B' Syllabus: Chinese 'B', Malay 'B' and Tamil 'B'. There is no 'B' Syllabus for MTL-in-lieu.
Grade requirements for specific subjects
You must meet the grade requirements for these specific subjects:
Subject | Grade Requirement |

Conditional admission criteria
If you did not meet the grade requirements for the specific subjects listed above, you are eligible for conditional admission when you meet one of these criteria:
- L1R5 gross aggregate score ≤ 15
- L1R5 gross aggregate score from 16 to 20, and have grades of A1 or A2 in all the 5 relevant subjects.
An 'Absent' grade in any of the specific subjects will not qualify you for conditional admission.
If you are conditionally admitted to a JC course, you must sit for the specific subject again and obtain the required grade by the end of Year 1 in JC. If you fail to do so, you will be transferred to Year 2 of a course in MI.
By the end of Year 2 in MI, if you still do not obtain the required grade, you will have to leave MI.
